We spent 6 days at Green Turtle Bay Marina in Grand River, KY. Nice marina with great folks. It’s a resort property with numerous rental properties, a couple pools, several restaurants, a spa and 2 courtesy cars. We mostly used this as a stopping place to recover from our time going down the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and sort of waiting things out until the leaves start to change colors a bit.
Marina getting into full fall festival mode
Martha was able to relax and get a manicure, pedicure and massage at the spa while John got some needed chores taken care of on the boat cleaning out sea strainers, replacing fuel filters, etc. The hot weather finally broke and we’ve been in the 70’s to low 80’s so a nice break from those 90’s we were having last week.
Cooler weather is making for some interesting morning fog
Today we finally decided to get moving – out of the marina anyway. Really just moved about 12 miles through the cut connecting Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake and then down a few miles to a nice anchorage called Duncan Cove. There are lots of these anchorages on the lake. All with great woodland protection as we’re surrounded by the undeveloped Land between the Lakes and nice anchor holding mud bottoms. Dropped anchor at 1PM so had time to deploy the dingy and a kayak. Rode to shore and then walked up a trail to the old Newby cemetery. Lots of graves marked with nothing more than a stone on the ground but some nicer headstones dated back to the mid 1800’s. Several civil war soldiers. Sad set of 3 children's headstones who each died 2 days after the next in 1918 during the Spanish Influenza outbreak. It appeared to have taken a pretty heavy toll on this area as quite a number of tombstones dated to that 1918 -1919 period. On a happier note, we enjoyed cocktails on the sundeck with Russ and Jax from our buddy boat Cat and Dogs as the sun set and the moon came out over the treeline. It looks to be a peaceful night at anchor.
