Aug 14 Bad River to Mills Lake

Aug 14 - Delayed post - no internet at anchor

I keep trying to reconcile the fact that it’s still the middle of summer and sweltering hot at home in GA.  Up here in the North Channel of Lake Huron yesterday we wore sweatshirts over our t-shirts all day , had to put an extra blanket on the bed last night  and  despite it being sunny today it never got out of the 60’s.  It feels too much like fall and is making me anxious about heading south before the cold weather sets in up here.  In addition, there are issues with a hard closure on the Illinois river lock system after leaving Chicago for several weeks mid Sept to early Oct. and we’re still debating pushing hard to get there before the closure or ease up and wait until after they reopen. Timing may get tight depending on weather on Lake Michigan if we try to expedite the push forward but by Oct. I know it will be getting cold and the days shorter so not my ideal scenario.

In the meantime, we’re trying to enjoy this area with its many anchorages.   We moved from Devils Door Rapids to an anchorage called Mills Lake.  Some amazing scenery as we left the Georgian Bay proper and cut up through Collins Inlet with its Fiord like cliffs on both sides.
Topography beginning to change

Sharp turn to port to enter Collins Inlet

Collins Inlet
One section as you enter the cut is well buoyed but marked on the charts as having shallow water and despite the lake being 3’ over datum we still saw some depths under our hull of less than 2’.  Glad we are coming through on a year with high water!!   Pretty isolated anchorage and not quite as picturesque as some others – just us and 2 other boats.  Plenty of swing room for everyone which will be needed as the wind is blowing a good 10-15  and expected to make a 180 degree turn in the middle of the night.   Not as impressed with this anchorage  as some others.
